CRUSHED cars went up in flames yesterday afternoon (Sunday, October 8) during a blaze at a scrap metal yard in Kingswinford.
At the height of the blaze, West Midlands Fire Service had eight fire engines and almost 40 firefighters tackling the major incident in Oak Lane at about 12.58pm.
A large quantity of cars – measuring 25x25m – were found to be well alight, with fire main water jets being used to put out the flames.
Other fire engines also attended the scene to help with water relay, while an onsite digger was used to create a fire break.
The fire service scaled down the number of firefighters and engines in attendance throughout the afternoon.
A fire service spokesman said: “We revisited the site yesterday evening and firefighters used a thermal imaging camera to check for hotspots to make sure there would be no flare-ups.
“Another revisit to the site was carried out at 9.30am this morning and firefighters found no hotspots remaining.
“We don’t currently have information about what caused the fire, so that is being investigated.”
