History provided by the vendor:
During WW2 the BBC used a house in Stocks Lane Penketh as a Broadcasting Studio. The present day owners have requested that the exact location is not published but we have their permission to reveal the following. The BBC made many modifications to the building which included strengthening the floors of some of the bedrooms to take the weight of their equipment and the cellar was re-enforced to make it bomb proof.
Two of the upstairs rooms were sound proofed for use as studios and when today's owners moved in, the doors to these rooms were still labelled "Studio One & Studio Two". Exactly what was broadcast from here is not clear but it is thought that talk shows, comedy & satire programs such as Itma, and some news items were among those broadcast from Penketh.
Rumour has it that this was a secret broadcasting station however not much of a secret because the surviving residents of that area knew this house as "The BBC House" during the war. It has been suggested that because of the fortification of this house that it may also have acted as a relay station for the RAF Burtonwood Air Base but this can not be confirmed.
The BBC finally sold the house at auction in 1949.
