DUDLEY people have been having their say on the controversy surrounding a council tenant threatened with eviction.

Colin Davies has been told he must quit his home in Stickley Lane, Gornal, after the death of his mother left him as the sole occupier of a three-bedroom house.

Mr Davies has lived in the property all his life and wants to be allowed to stay but Dudley Council is adamant he should make way for a family.

Last week the News told how Mr Davies' friends and neighbours were rallying round to support his campaign and were even prepared to block the way if bailiffs arrived to evict the 58-year-old.

The story sparked debate on our website where opinions were divided on whether he should stay or go.

Mrs Huggett said: "It's about time he grew up and stopped being so selfish. It's not like the council are going to make him homeless. A 3 bedroomed council house is designed for a family not a man on his own. Denying children of a family home is not something that should be supported."

Cheesed Off Tax Payer added: "The hard working tax payers will not want to subsidise him living in a 3 bedroom house, when some of the same hard working tax payers cannot afford a 3 bedroom house themselves."

Backing for Mr Davies came from Anwat52, who said: "It's not a house its his home where he was born and has lived all his life 58 years to be exact.

"It is disgusting that Dudley Council should force him out at a time when he is still mourning the recent death of his mother."

Mr Davies, who does not work due to illness, also has support from UKIP who are aiming the present a petition to the next full Dudley Council meeting calling for Mr Davies to be allowed to stay.

Bill Etheridge, UKIP Dudley chairman, said: "He is not a well man, take him away from his support network and you would have to have to get health workers and social workers involved.

"If we uproot him to the other side of the borough the government will have to pay to look after him."
