Staff at Dudley Council are celebrating after winning an award for community integration.
The council’s Participation Development Team scooped a trophy for its work in Netherton to bring diverse communities together through its support of the Five Estates Plus Project.
Established in 2009 by the Centre for Equality and Diversity (CfED) in partnership with the Dudley Federation of Tenants and Residents’ Associations, the Five Estates Plus Project was founded to reduce the social isolation of migrants on housing estates and bring communities together.
The accolade was awarded to the council team by the CfED and the Five Estates Plus Project in honour of International Migrant Day, which took place on December 18.
Councillor Steve Waltho, cabinet member for housing and community safety, said:
“Congratulations to the Participation Development Team. As a community council we strive to involve and support every section of the communities which we serve. The Five Estates Plus Project is a highly successful initiative which has been proven to break down social barriers and increase the numbers of residents who participate in local decision-making processes.”
Chris Bate is a Dudley resident who is a member of the working team of the Five Estates Plus Project, who has also been recognised by the CfED and Five Estates Plus Project for her contribution towards the scheme. She said: “The project is wonderful because it has brought people together from different backgrounds and created community spirit.
“I’m delighted that the Participation Development Team was given an award because they have been our backbone. They guide us and often work out-of-hours to provide extra support. It’s wonderful to see their work acknowledged.”
