SHAUN Perry insisted there were still positives to take despite his Dudley Kingswinford side suffering a 62-0 hiding at Hull this week - writes NICK PULLEN
It was the DK’s 20th defeat in what has been a dreadful campaign to date which has already seen them leak over 1,000 points.
But joint head coach Perry remains upbeat and the former England international claimed: “The results don’t show the effort that the boys are putting in. They are an enjoyable bunch of lads to coach and I enjoy being involved with them.
“The back line has an average age of 18 or 19 and as long as we can keep them together, they’ll get better.
“It’s been a difficult league for players to cut their teeth in and I admit, I knew it was going to be tough, but I didn’t realise how tough.
“We’re already putting in plans in place for next season and I’ve no reason to believe we can’t come back to this level.
“But I didn’t expect to lose so many players from last season, while some of the others have disappeared. Those that have remained have done so because they want to be part of Dudley Kingswinford.
“At the moment, it’s silly mistakes that are killing us. We gave the game away against Hull in the first 20 minutes and although we improved in the second half, the game was over for us by then.
“We can’t keep making the same mistakes because the players have been around long enough to know what to expect”.
Hull ran in a total of 10 tries to ease their own relegation fears and pull six points clear of the drop zone in the process.
Full back Jamie Barnard led the early scoring spree with a hat-trick of tries while No. 8 Santiago Socino added two more, Greg Lound kicking the remaining points as Hull put themselves out of sight by the interval.
The second half continued in a similar vein, flanker Max Argyle adding two more tries while Gary Clarke, Joe Stafford and Keith Bright completed the scoring before Hull blotted their copybook by having prop Harrison Lloyd sent off .
The DK’s host fellow strugglers Bromsgrove this Saturday - a game Perry believes the DK’s can register a first win He claimed: “We had a poor first half at their place earlier in the season, but we nearly pull;ed it back.
“I sense there will be a different mood in the camp this week ahead of the Bromsgrove game and it would be fantastic for everyone at the club if we could win.
“We picked up a few knocks and bruises at Hull, but everyone should be fit”.
The DK’s hav received a number of applications for the vacant post of Director of Rugby and Perry added: “We need to get somebody in place quite rapidly so that we can start planning for next season”.
