DISRUPTION in Dudley while revamp work continues will now last until late summer after unforeseen delays.
The work, which has caused the closure of Castle Street and New Street, is the first phase of a £6.7m redevelopment of the town centre.
The work was due for completion in May but unexpected delays caused by underground utility pipes and cables mean an extension for the closures.
John Millar, director of the urban environment, said: “I would like to thank shops, businesses, residents and shoppers for their continued patience during this time.”
“Major refurbishment and reconstruction projects such as this are always challenging particularly in town centre locations where it is important to maintain the best possible access to shops and businesses.
“Whilst works in Castle Street and New Street are being extended due to unavoidable issues on site I am confident the new market place and surrounding area will be a major boost to trade and will attract new investment in the town centre once completed.
“I also want to stress that Dudley town centre and the bus station remain very much open for business during the scheme and we will continue to work with Centro and bus companies to keep any inconvenience to a minimum.”
Dudley Council officers are looking into the possibility of providing extra temporary car parking in New Street during the closures, all town centre car parks will remain open.
More information is available at www.dudley.gov.uk or by calling Dudley Council Plus on 0300 555 2345.
Meanwhile Dudley residents are being urged to have their say on the future of the town as the deadline for consultation on the draft town centre action plan draws to a close.
The plan will be a framework for developments including plans for a new food store in the town centre, a new 250 space car park on Tower Street and connect the Castle Hill attractions, Castlegate and the town centre.
Consultation on the draft plan runs until Friday April 25, copies of the questionnaire are available online at www.dudley.gov.uk or at at Dudley Council Plus, in Castle Street, Dudley Library and Dudley Museum.
