VANDALS have smashed hundreds of pounds worth of trees in Dudley which were planted as part of a multi-million pound housing development.

Yobs snapped six of the trees on Birmingham New Road overnight on Friday (April 1).

They were planted two years ago as part of the North Priory development, now known as Friars Gate.

Residents are now being urged to be the “eyes and ears” of the community and report incidents to the police.

Alan Lunt, strategic director for the place directorate at Dudley Council, said: “This is a despicable and senseless attack on these trees, which ultimately leaves the tax payer out of pocket.

"We work hard as a council to maintain the green areas of the borough which enhances a community like this."

He continued: "I hope people will be the eyes and ears of their community and report any incidents like this to us, and pass on any information they may have about this mindless attack.”

People can report issues to the council via Dudley Council Plus on 0300 555 2345 or the police via 101.
