A SCHEME has been launched to raise youngsters aspirations in Dudley by setting up primary schools with role models.

The project, run by education charity Future First, sees schoolchildren linked with former pupils who can broaden their horizons and boost their aspirations for the future.

Alumni from schools join with parents, governors and local businesses to deliver careers workshops, speak in assemblies, provide advice and guidance to pupils, and share practical skills for future jobs.

Bishop Milner Catholic College was the first in Dudley to take part in the scheme and has so far built a network of 220 former students to share their knowledge.

The project is now being rolled out to primary schools in Dudley, with St Chad’s Catholic Primary School, St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Queen Victoria Primary School, and Jesson’s CofE Primary School so far lined up to take part.

Angie Shackleton, assistant headteacher at Jesson’s CofE Primary School, said: "Having ex-pupils involved in the life of the school, however they have become successful, would only be for the good of our current and future children, so they can see what is achievable."

Future First Head of Primary, Amy Cuffley, said: "It is never too soon for children to hear about the world of opportunities available in their future. The importance of engaging children early about life after school was demonstrated by the number of schools which applied to take part in this project.

"Our work in secondary schools has already shown that alumni and local supporters are fantastic relatable role models, having an enormous positive influence on the self-belief and motivation of young people. This initiative will take these opportunities to primary schools and their pupils ensuring all children have the chance to succeed regardless of their background."

The scheme has so far signed up 994 volunteers across the country to support youngsters at their former primary school.
