Ms Kumar, along with Dudley Labour Party members, greeted students at their stall and invited them to fill out a digital survey to share any concerns.

She also engaged in discussions with students and teachers about issues affecting the community and student life.

Jack Stroke, student and president of Dudley’s Student Union, said: "I am so proud of the event the student union has organised for our student members.

"A lot of hard work went into planning this successful freshers' to kick-start the college year.

"I was so excited to meet our new Labour MP Sonia Kumar and look forward to working with her over the next year."

Neil Thomas, CEO and principal of the college, said: "It's the biggest number we've ever had of school leavers, of full-time learners at the college, in its entire history so it's quite a year for us.

"And it's great to have Sonia here, I know she's super busy, but to give up her time to make herself known to the student population here is really important."

Ms Kumar added: "It was a fantastic event, full of vibrance and great to speak to students about women in politics and connect with the Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, Dudley Libraries, and the National Union of Students.

"It is always a pleasure to meet with my residents, I take pride in knowing what our communities need and by speaking with students and other organisations, I can best present their views in Westminster."
