A GIFTED Kingswinford teenager has taken up a place at prestigious Eton College after being awarded a scholarship.

Joshua Garbett, a former pupil at Summerhill School, applied for a scholarship through the Orwell Award, a sixth form programme that offers fully funded places at the elite Eton College.

Named after George Orwell, who was himself a recipient of a scholarship, the Orwell award is designed to offer life-changing opportunities for boys from state schools who have the potential to thrive in academia.

As a recipient of the award, Joshua has become a full member of the Eton community - able to enjoy access to all facilities, staff and the school life that Eton has to offer.

Tim Harris, headteacher at Summerhill School, said ‘The whole school community are incredibly proud of Joshua and what he has achieved. He is an outstanding student and a wonderful young man, who has an exciting future ahead.”

Joshua, aged 16, went through a rigorous application and interview process, competing against students from across the country, to gain a place at the prestigious school which has educated former British Prime Ministers, members of the Royal Family and some of Britain’s most famous actors and writers.

He has chosen to study chemistry, biology, geography and maths at A level, and hopes to later study medicine at university.
