A tram was derailed after colliding with a car, injuring three people and causing major traffic disruption.

Three passengers in the car sustained minor injuries from the crash, which happened on the A41 Bilston Street Island in Wolverhampton.

The crash happened shortly before 9.15pm on Monday, October 7 with the road shut until approximately 12.45pm the following day.

Tram services between Wolverhampton Station and Priestfield were cancelled with bus services also operating on a diverted route.  

A spokesperson from West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called by the police at 9.13pm to the junction of the A4150 and Middle Cross, Wolverhampton to reports of an RTC involving a car and a tram.

“One ambulance attended the scene. Three men from the car were assessed by the ambulance crew.

“Two were conveyed to Russells Hall Hospital with non-serious injuries. The third man was discharged on scene.”

Two recovery trucks worked to successfully recover the tram and services were back up and running by approximately 1.00pm on October 8. 

West Midlands Fire Service said: “Fire engines from Fallings Park and Bilston responded, the first arriving within three minutes of being mobilised.

“This was a collision between a car and a metro tram. The car came to rest on all four wheels.

“Three casualties in the car were assessed by paramedics and suffered minor injuries. No injuries were sustained by anyone on the tram.”

They added: "Police colleagues were in attendance to assist with traffic management. Metro engineers were also in attendance. Fire crews left the scene at 10.28pm.”
