RESIDENTS have had their say on Dudley Council's proposed changes to bin collections.

The council announced plans yesterday (Tuesday, October 15) which will see black bin collections reduce to fortnightly and a new weekly food waste collection introduced.

Borough householders will be issued with a 23-litre outdoor caddy for food waste, or access to a communal bin, as well as a seven-litre caddy to collect food waste indoors.

Dudley Council’s ruling cabinet will be asked to approve the new collection service model – due to start from April 2026 - at a meeting next week.

Recycling collections will continue to be be fortnightly, but residents will get a new 240-litre wheeled bin for mixed cans, plastic and glass.

Existing blue bags will be retained for paper and card.

Garden waste collections will also stay fortnightly and remain a paid for service.

Remaining refuse will also be collected fortnightly, using the existing black bin, which the council said will bring it in line with the "overwhelming majority of local authorities across the country."

The news has prompted a mixed reaction on social media, with some homeowners pleased that a bin will be issued for recycling and that more is being done to help the environment.

Others expressed concerns saying their black bins are already full every week and the move could lead to fly-tipping.

Reacting to the news Paul Gawdan said: “I think a wheelie bin for the plastics is a good idea, it might encourage more recycling."

Tim Weller said: “Recycling is urgent and must be increased in the light of finite resources and a finite planet that is not expanding in line with our ever thoughtless, ever greedy demands for yet more and more of everything."

Tina Howell said: “I'd much prefer a recycling bin for tins, paper, plastic etc instead of these stupid bags that blow away in the wind or get taken by someone else.”

Vicky Louise said: “I’m surprised they haven’t done this sooner to be honest, many other local authorities already do the fortnightly general waste collection and having all the recycling together is easier.

“We used to do this 12 years ago in a different area.”

But others were not happy.

Zoe Gore said: “Where do they expect us to keep all these different bins! I just about fit the black and green one on my drive, I’ll have to start parking the car on the road so the bins can be parked in its space.”

Mark Cullen said: “Ridiculous.

“We already struggle as a family of four.

"Fly tipping will rocket.”

Laura Coles said: “I can barely shut the lid on our black bin weekly, let alone fortnightly!”

The council said changes are designed to improve recycling rates by making it easier for residents.

It said councils have to have food waste collections in place by 2026 under new government legislation.

The proposals will be discussed at Dudley Council’s cabinet on Wednesday October 23 at 6pm in Committee Room 2 at Dudley Council House.

Members of the public are welcome.
