People in the Midlands are the most confident in the UK when it comes to discussing funeral plans, a recent survey has revealed.

According to research by funeral plan provider Golden Charter, 41 per cent of Midlanders feel comfortable talking about funeral arrangements with their loved ones.

This is a stark contrast to Wales, where confidence is more than 10 per cent lower.

Despite this openness, the study shows that more than half of adults in the Midlands have misconceptions about what a funeral plan involves.

Only five per cent actually have a funeral plan in place.

With the cost-of-living crisis and rising funeral expenses, many are at risk of funeral poverty.

A funeral plan is a pre-paid agreement that allows individuals to arrange and pay for their funeral services in advance.

This protects families from unexpected costs and ensures final wishes are met.

Sorya Kousourou, chief customer officer at the funeral plan provider, said: "Planning for death can be daunting – it’s not really anything anyone wants to do.

"It’s encouraging to see that Midlanders are leading the way in discussing funeral plans, but there is still much work to be done to increase awareness of pre-paid plans, especially considering rising funeral costs."

She added: "Funeral plans bring more than just financial benefits – they also minimise difficult decisions that need to be made during a stressful time for families.

"It’s important for anyone considering a pre-paid funeral plan to have open, transparent conversations with their family to ensure their wishes are met, and their family supported, following their passing."
