Cyclists are being urged to take extra care as the clocks go back and winter draws in.

The clocks will go back on Sunday, October 27, marking the beginning of shorter days, reduced sunlight, dark mornings, and early evenings.

Despite the challenging conditions, many commuters continue to cycle through the winter months.

However, the cold weather, slippery roads, and reduced visibility require extra care and attention for those on two wheels.

Simon Bennett, managing director of bike insurance company cycleGuard, said: "Protecting your bike from all that winter can throw at it can enhance your safety and prolong your bike's life."

To help cyclists make the most of winter, the company has shared a few tips to tackle the unique challenges of the colder months.

Winter-proofing is essential and cleaning your bike can help uncover mechanical defects.

A simple wipe-down after each ride, coupled with a thorough clean of the drivetrain every few weeks, should be sufficient.

Mudguards can also be beneficial for preventing mud and grit from splashing onto the cyclist and those riding behind.

The addition of winter tyres can provide added grip on uncertain surfaces and extra puncture protection.

Wider tyres, sized between 25 millimetres and 28 millimetres, which can run at a lower pressure, will provide additional grip and comfort in slick and icy conditions.

With the days getting shorter, it is also crucial to ensure the bike is fitted with good-quality lights and reflectors.

Each bike should have at least one, or preferably two, rear lights ready for winter, in addition to a front light.

Reflectors will provide extra visibility and can be a lifesaver if the bike’s lights run out of batteries during a ride.

Mr Bennett added: "There are many steps you can implement to make winter cycling safer, but it is important to assess your abilities and decide whether you are up for cycling in winter."

By taking these measures, cyclists can ensure their safety and enjoy a comfortable ride even in the most challenging winter conditions.
