A man currently receiving outpatient treatment will embark on a sponsored horse ride to raise awareness for men's mental health.

On Sunday (October 27), Jack Mills will ride to Bushey Fields Hospital in Dudley, where he is currently receiving care.

The ride aims to generate funds to improve the hospital's garden, which Mr Mills feels needs attention.

He said: "Whilst there is a small bit of green space, there’s still a lot of concrete.

"I want it to be somewhere people can actually sit and feel at ease.

"Somewhere that helps people when they’re feeling low."

Mr Mills's connection to the hospital is deeply personal, as he was battling severe anxiety 18 months ago and felt he had reached rock bottom.

He said that the support from the hospital, particularly Dr Pegg and her team, helped him regain hope.

He said: "Without their help, I honestly don’t think I’d be here today.

"They helped me through a time in my life when I didn’t think I had many options left."

His horse, George, will accompany him on the special ride.

George has been a consistent source of strength for Mr Mills during his recovery.

He said: "There were mornings I didn’t want to get out of bed, but George was always there waiting for me.

"That’s why it feels right to do this with him."

Apart from raising funds, Mr Mills is also passionate about encouraging men to speak openly about their mental health.

He said: "I know how hard it is to open up.

"A lot of men feel like they can’t talk about what they’re going through.

"But I want them to know it’s OK to ask for help.

"It could save your life, just like it saved mine."

Mr Mills has already raised £870, but he is keen to raise that sum.
