A man has raised more than £1,300 after going on a horse ride to Bushey Fields Hospital to raise awareness for men's mental health.

Jack Mills, who receives outpatient care at the Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, organised the fundraiser to give back to the Dudley hospital, which he credits for helping him during his mental health struggles.

The funds from the ride will be used to improve the hospital's garden, which Mr Mills feels is in need of attention.

He said: "Whilst there is a small bit of green space, there’s still a lot of concrete.

"I want it to be somewhere people can actually sit and feel at ease.

"Somewhere that helps people when they’re feeling low."

Around 18 months ago, Mr Mills was suffering from severe anxiety and felt he had reached rock bottom.

He credits the support from the hospital, particularly Dr Pegg and her team, for helping him see hope.

Mr Mills said: "Without their help, I honestly don’t think I’d be here today.

"They helped me through a time in my life when I didn’t think I had many options left."

His horse George joined him on the special ride.

Mr Mills said: "There were mornings I didn’t want to get out of bed, but George was always there waiting for me.

"That’s why it feels right to do this with him."

Mr Mills hopes the ride will start conversations about men's mental health.

He said: "I know how hard it is to open up.

"A lot of men feel like they can’t talk about what they’re going through.

"But I want them to know it’s OK to ask for help.

"It could save your life, just like it saved mine."

Mr Mills has said he plans to continue supporting the trust and raising awareness beyond the ride.

Donations can still be made through his fundraising page.
