A DUDLEY gymgoer has told of the “emotional” moment he learned he’d realised his dream to become Mr Universe.

Bodybuilder Nick Whitehouse, an electrician by day, has been pumping iron for more than 10 years but on Sunday (November 3) at the NABBA Universe show at Birmingham’s NEC he lifted the biggest title of them all – the Class 1 Mr Universe title won by Arnold Schwarzenegger back in his early bodybuilding days.

Nick, aged 41, who lives in Stourbridge but hails from Rowley Regis, said it had been his dream to follow in Arnie’s footsteps and win the number one title – and on October 13 at the NABBA England show at Brierley Hill Civic Hall he qualified for the internationally-renowned Universe show where he beat top bodybuilders from around the world to be crowned the ultimate winner.

Nick, a father-of-four girls, who runs supplement shop RENW in Stourbridge along with his girlfriend Rachael Edwards, said it had been a “very tough” few months juggling work, the business, family and training but the hard work and dedication was worth it.

He said it was an “emotional” moment when he heard his name called out as winner and he added: “It’s been my ambition since I started to become Mr Universe.”

Nick, who trains at Foundry Gym, Dudley, had a dedicated 22-week training schedule to get his six feet one frame into peak physical condition and he said the journey to becoming Mr Universe had been physically and mentally punishing.

Starting his day with a 5.30am workout, his routine consisted of six meals a day, a 40-minute cardio workout each day and weight training five times a week.

He thanked coach Brett Smith for helping him with diet advice and his family for supporting him on his journey to success.

After the high of winning one of the most coveted titles in fitness, a few happy tears and a little celebratory cake – it’s been back to the routine as usual for Nick who can now compete internationally after gaining his pro card as part of his prize.
