VIOLENCE broke out between two groups who attended a family-friendly sporting event, leaving a number of people injured.
Seven men, including five from the West Midlands, have been jailed for their roles in the brawl last summer.
Men from two rival groups took weapons including guns and machetes to the event in Derby to have what police have said was a “pre-planned” fight.
Derbyshire Police were called to a field where a Kabaddi tournament, which is a sport originating in India involving two teams, had turned into a “large scale fight” in August 2023.
Police have released CCTV footage from the incident, which shows hundreds of spectators who were there to watch the sporting action flee as gunshots rang out.
Parminder Singh, 25, who was shot in the groin during the fight, was captured on drone footage at the incident and his DNA was found on a loaded semi-automatic pistol that was found in a bag.
Malkeet Singh, who was part of the other group, took part in the violence before being attacked himself, suffering head injuries.
The 24-year-old travelled to the event with 34-year-old Hardev Uppal, who was caught on video shooting Parminder Singh in the groin before being assaulted by the rival groups and suffering a fractured skull.
31-year-old Doodhnath Tripathi was a part of the group that attacked Malkeet Singh with weapons including swords.
Karamjit Singh, 36, was also involved in the violence against Hardev Uppal and Malkeet Singh and was seen on video brandishing two swords above his head.
31-year-old Jagjit Singh was seen firing a gun and 33-year-old Baljit Sing was seen in possession of a weapon.
All seven men were sentence at Derby Crown Court on November 6 for the following charges:
- Malkeet Singh of Grindleford Road, Birmingham was jailed for three years for violent disorder
- Parminder Singh of Parkes Street, Smethwick was jailed for six years and six months for violent disorder and possession of a firearm
- Karamjit Singh of Shakespeare Street, Derby admitted to being in possession of a bladed article and violent disorder and was jailed for four years and six months

Senior Investigating Officer from Derbyshire Police, Detective Chief Inspector Matt Croome, said: “This should have been a fun family day out at a sporting event but it descended into a huge violent disorder which left multiple people injured and many people in fear for their safety.
“These men attended this event with the specific intention of causing trouble having pre-planned their attack and arming themselves with weapons.
“Their actions and the level of violence seen on this day was abhorrent.
“For the many people who attended the event with good intentions, this was a very frightening and upsetting scene and we are grateful to them, as well as the wider community, for all of their help with our investigation throughout.
“We know this investigation has had a huge impact on people and I’d like to thank all those who have helped us bring these seven men to justice as well as all of the officers involved in what has been a long and very complex investigation.”
