AS we approach the festive season, I’d like to start by inviting Dudley residents to my Christmas Coffee Morning on Saturday December 7, at Dudley College.
Starting at 11 am to 12:30pm, it would be fantastic to speak to as many people as possible. So come and have a chat, I can talk about what I do as your politician, and I want to hear your thoughts and opinions - or simply enjoy a free hot drink and mince pie. I’d love to meet you!
When reflecting on the progress we’ve made and the work still ahead, I remain committed to championing the issues that matter most to Dudley. From securing funding from the Long-Term Plan for Towns to addressing childcare challenges.
I’m thrilled to announce that Dudley has been chosen as one of the areas to benefit from the Long-Term Plan for Towns. Over the next decade, we will receive up to £20 million in funding and support to tackle deprivation and build a brighter future for our town. This funding from the government empowers our community to define and drive the change we need, bringing together residents, businesses, and local leaders to shape Dudley’s future. From strengthening infrastructure to boosting local services, this investment should serve the people of Dudley’s best interests.
Childcare remains a pressing issue for families across the Black Country. In a Westminster Hall debate I secured, I highlighted that Dudley is classified as a "childcare desert," with just 17 places per 100 children compared to the national average of 25. For families, this means fewer options, longer waits, and tough decisions about work and care.
We also face significant challenges supporting children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Over a third of children in Black Country early years settings require additional support, far above the national average. Yet, resources are stretched thin, leaving many families struggling to access vital services. There is still more work to be done but the government’s commitment to provide free childcare for children aged two to four, expand funding, and open 300 new nurseries within a year is a lifeline for parents. Quality childcare not only benefits children’s development but also strengthens our local economy by enabling more parents, especially mothers, to return to work. I will not stop fighting for families across Dudley.
I remain dedicated to listening to your concerns and fighting for the issues that matter most to Dudley. Let’s continue working together to make our town a better place for everyone.
