WOLVERHAMPTON Council has said they would be open to discussions about potentially bringing a permanent memorial of the late singer Liam Payne to the city.
Liam, who grew up in the Bushbury area of Wolverhampton, died after falling off a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires in October.
The 31-year-old became an international sensation as one fifth of the boyband One Direction and was laid to rest at a funeral service in the Home Counties last week, on November 20.
Since his death, memorials have been created all over the world honouring the singer’s life and legacy, including in Wolverhampton.
A collection of balloons, candles and heartfelt messages of love and grief sit underneath the bandstand in West Park.
However, the council has said they would consider creating a permanent memorial to Liam in the city, but only when his family is ready and willing to work with them.
Mr Stephen Simkins, the leader of Wolverhampton Council, said: "The tragic passing of Liam Payne has shocked everyone in Wolverhampton, and there has been an outpouring of grief over the last few days.
"In terms of a more lasting legacy, we will work with Liam’s family - at an appropriate time for them - to discuss how we may be able to mark his legacy and contribution to the city."
It comes as thousands of people have signed a petition calling for a permanent memorial for the late singer to be erected in the city.
The petition has reached nearly 6,000 signatures and calls for Liam’s “life and legacy to be commemorated in a way that is as enduring as the light he imparted unto the world.”
The description for the petition reads: “By erecting a permanent structure in Wolverhampton, we are ensuring that Liam Payne is remembered for generations to come.
“This memorial will not only serve as a place to pay respects but also a reminder of the incredible impact that individuals can make on the world.
“We propose that the city, partnered with local artists, can create a memorial that reflects the spirit and essence of Liam Payne - his roots, his musical journey, and his incredible contribution to the international music community.
“Let us honour Liam Payne’s legacy in a lasting way. A way that allows people from all walks of life to find a space to remember him and the joy his music brought into their lives.
“There is no better tribute to a man who dedicated his life to reaching people through his art.
“This act of remembrance can provide comfort and solace to those who have been touched by his life and passing."
