A BID to build three new homes in the garden of a Gornal house has been thrown out by planners who said it was "backland development."

The application to build one house and two dormer bungalows on the plot of 389 Himley Road has been turned down.

The site is opposite The Bulls Head Bar and Grill and Himley Road Methodist Church.

Plans showed that each new home would have had a garden and parking for two vehicles and there would be a new private shared access road.

One neighbour objected saying the development would block light to their home.

Planners at Dudley Council turned down the proposal on November 25 saying that: "The proposed development would result in a form of backland development that would be at odds with the prevailing pattern of linear development along the road frontage, to the detriment of the character and form of the Area of High Historic Townscape Value."

They also said that the layout would provide an "inadequate living environment with poor privacy and private amenity space" for any future occupiers of the new homes.

They also agreed that the development would result in a loss of light and outlook of a neighbouring house.

Planners said that the outline planning application had not demonstrated that there would be sufficient access and parking provision and that the scheme would not have a "detrimental impact on highways safety."

A report states the existing house, in the Gornal ward, is on a large 938sqm (0.09ha) plot.
