IN a heart-stopping finale, injury time tries from James Freeman and Charlie Hayter, plus two immaculate touchline conversions from Cameron Brown, brought Stourbridge Saxons a come-from-behind win over the Cornish All Blacks.
Loughborough Students’ fly half Brown’s superb touchline conversion, brought Stourbridge level three minutes into stoppage time, after their pack drove no. 8 Freeman over from a close-range lineout.
Incredibly, better was to come for the home fans, when former Nottingham centre Hayter reacted quickest to a loose ball, and sprinted 50 metres to the corner, to seal an unlikely Saxons win.
Stourbridge had dominated possession and territory for much of a scrappy contest, but Launceston’s well-organised and committed defence, plus too many home errors had allowed the Cornishmen to hold on to their slender lead.
Centre Ryan Westren’s 11th minute try, his sixth of a prolific season, plus Mal Roberts’ conversion, kept the visitors ahead for over an hour. Their driving maul marched ten metres upfield, before burly centre Pale Nonu crashed over the gainline, and released Westren, who hit the after-burners to swerve behind the posts.
Brown missed three relatively straightforward penalty chances in the first half, before finally opening his account soon after the break.
This score came while the visitors, who have the worst disciplinary record in National One, were reduced to 13 men, after prop Neil Bayliss and scrum half Jason Spice both went to the sin bin.
Bayliss saw yellow six minutes before the break, after excellent referee Dale Newett adjudged him guilty of taking Ben Hughes out in the lineout. Former New Zealand All Black Jason Spice followed him to the sidelines on the whistle, for a deliberate knock on.
Experienced full back Roberts restored the visitors’ seven point advantage after 53 minutes, but with Stourbridge upping the tempo, his team were forced to defend for the remainder of the match.
With ten minutes remaining, home winger Simon Frewin broke Ed Lewsey’s tackle and burst 50 metres upfield, but the Cornish All Blacks’ scramble defence was upto the task.
As the clock went past 80 minutes, the sense of agitation around Stourton was palpable, but for a second consecutive home game the Saxons finished strongest to claim a memorable win.
