STUART Wedge believes the biggest pressure is on leaders Barnt Green as the Birmingham Premier League title race hots up.
With just six games to go, Wedge’s second placed Himley side have the gap pegged at 16 points as both teams trade blow-for-blow, week-in, week-out.
Last Saturday Himley hammered West Bromwich Dartmouth by nine wickets, only for the Green to go and snatch victory at Walsall.
And while Wedge admits some disappointment at not having closed on their rivals, he believes the greatest frustration will be felt by the long-time leaders.
He said: “I think there is definitely a bit more pressure on them than there is us.
“They have been getting win after win and have been at the top for such a long time but they still haven’t been able to shake us off.
“They know one defeat could see them knocked off the top.
“As our game finished early on Saturday a few of us went to Walsall to watch the end of their game. There was definitely a sense of relief when they got home.
“As for us, we are just plodding along playing some fantastic cricket.
“We know if we keep this form going it will take a really special performance for someone to beat us.”
Wedge was able to look back on a fine individual display against West Bromwich, as his bowling figures of five for 28 played a large part in the hosts being dismissed for just 149.
After losing Jamie Harris for a duck, Chris Tranter (75 not out) and Wasim Jaffer (74 not out) were once again the men to guide Himley to victory.
The skipper’s efforts with the ball follow some excellent recent performances by Dan Smith and Nick Harrison and Wedge believes the bowling attack is among the best in the league.
He said: “The great thing about our attack is it’s a team effort.
“We have certain individuals who have had outstanding performances but everyone contributes.
“There is always someone there who steps up. On Saturday it was me but in the past it’s been Dan, Nick or Richard Jones.
“Then come Shafiz Ahmed and Chris Tranter who have made an impact in several games.”
