IF you’ve got young children, there’s a good chance you feel like you’re living with Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker and the Ewoks 24/7.

The magic of Star Wars never fails to win over new generations of fans and is the perfect theme for a new attraction for 2012 at Legoland Windsor.

Nine-year-olds Nicholas and Sam loved the Star Wars Miniland experience so much they went round it twice – and it’s difficult not to be overwhelmed by monster, and in some cases, moving models of spectacular spacecraft.

The sight of the enormous droid armies reminded me of the domino toppling on Roy Castle’s Record Breakers back in the 1970s. Knock one over and you know exactly what’s going to happen!

But if you’re not a sci-fi fan, don’t fear – there’s lots more to enjoy though it’s best to pace yourself otherwise you’ll soon get tired. For an additional fee, computerised Q-Bots will help you negotiate the rides more quickly.

What I love about Legoland is there’s plenty of green space, especially around the delightful Miniland, in which to take a break and contemplate your next adventure. After an initial burst round Tatooine, etc we headed for the Vikings’ River Splash, a smart move in 80 degree heat. After bumping through the rapids, we were soaked for, well, all of five minutes.

A picnic in a shady spot in Miniland – where we spotted the mini-Queen wearing a diamond encrusted crown on the balcony of Buckingham Palace - was followed by a gentle trip on the Sky Rider and short film fun, Star Wars related of course - in the Imagination Theatre.

Nick and Sam picked up their junior licences in the Driving School and we rounded off our busy day with a leisurely ride on the Orient Expedition train.
